But how does this impact the climate? Here’s an important fact: clothes don’t last as long as they used to. A study found that people wear clothes about 36% less than they did 15 years ago. Many clothes are worn only seven to ten times before being thrown away. The fashion industry uses a lot of water. It used up about 700 gallons to make one cotton shirt and 2,000 gallons to make a pair of jeans. According to the 2015 documentary The True Cost, the world buys around 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year, which is 400% more than twenty years ago. This huge use of resources harms the environment, affecting water and air quality and speeding up climate change. The truth is, thrift shopping can actually lower the carbon footprint tied to manufacturing and shipping. By choosing second-hand items, you save resources and reduce the greenhouse gasses created when making and shipping new products. This small change in how you shop can make a big difference in lowering your carbon footprint.

These brands create their products more slowly and don’t produce large quantities of each item.
