Greenhouse emissions are believed as a significant cause of today’s climate change. They are trapping the sun’s heat and stopping it from leaking back into space like an earth’s blanket. This leads to global warming and climate disruptions, which harm the world as temperatures rise, throwing nature’s delicate balance out of order. The effects of climate change are already threatening our health, our communities, our economy, our security, and our children’s future.

Countries around the world have made their own strategy and initiation to help limit climate change. The Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) is one of the international initiatives aimed at addressing the environmental challenges of the region by promoting clean energy solutions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, it is involving partner countries from 11 nations such as Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam. AZEC launched in 2023 with it’s concept aims for energy transitions tailored to each country's circumstances. AZEC’s vision is to create a future where energy is clean, abundant, and accessible to all, fostering sustainable development while achieving economic growth. This initiative focuses on advancing renewable energy technologies, strengthening policies for energy efficiency, and promoting climate-friendly practices that will help achieve carbon neutrality by mid-century.

Korea is already a global leader in technology, manufacturing, and innovation, with an established commitment to addressing environmental challenges. The country has made significant contributions in renewable energy development, electric vehicles, and carbon-neutral technologies. However, as the impacts of climate change become more apparent, it is critical that Korea strengthens its role in international efforts to combat climate change, particularly in Asia, where emissions are rising rapidly.

By joining AZEC, Korea can further expand its leadership in green technology and sustainability. It would have the opportunity to collaborate with neighboring countries to share knowledge, enhance innovation, and leverage its technological expertise to reduce emissions across the region. Korea’s participation would not only help achieve regional climate goals but also create new economic opportunities in emerging green sectors. Moreover, Korea’s inclusion in AZEC would solidify its role as a global leader in environmental stewardship. The country’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and its ambitious carbon neutrality goals will be supported and enhanced by active engagement in regional climate initiatives like AZEC. This collaborative approach would significantly improve the effectiveness of climate action across Asia.

The global climate crisis requires immediate and collective action. We urge the Korean government to join AZEC, work collaboratively with other nations, and strengthen Korea's leadership in the global fight against climate change. We can help ensure that the country continues to play a vital role in mitigating climate change and driving the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future for Asia and the world. Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future for generations to come.

온실가스 배출은 오늘날 기후 변화의 중요한 원인으로 여겨지고 있습니다. 온실가스는 태양열을 가두어 지구 담요처럼 우주로 누출되는 것을 막고 있습니다. 이로 인해 지구 온난화와 기후 교란이 발생하여 기온이 상승함에 따라 전 세계에 해를 끼치고 자연의 섬세한 균형이 혼란스러워지고 있습니다. 기후 변화의 영향은 이미 우리의 건강, 지역사회, 경제, 안보, 아이들의 미래를 위협하고 있습니다.

전 세계 국가들은 기후 변화를 제한하기 위해 자체적인 전략과 이니셔티브를 마련했습니다. 아시아 제로 배출 공동체(AZEC)는 청정 에너지 솔루션을 촉진하고 온실가스 배출을 줄임으로써 이 지역의 환경 문제를 해결하기 위한 국제 이니셔티브 중 하나입니다. 현재 호주, 브루나이 다루살람, 캄보디아, 인도네시아, 일본, 라오스 PDR, 말레이시아, 필리핀, 싱가포르, 태국, 베트남 등 11개국의 파트너 국가들이 참여하고 있습니다. AZEC는 각국의 상황에 맞춘 에너지 전환을 목표로 2023년에 출범했습니다. AZEC의 비전은 에너지가 깨끗하고 풍부하며 모두가 접근할 수 있는 미래를 창출하는 동시에 지속 가능한 개발을 촉진하는 동시에 경제 성장을 달성하는 것입니다. 이 이니셔티브는 재생 에너지 기술을 발전시키고 에너지 효율성을 위한 정책을 강화하며, 세기 중반까지 탄소 중립을 달성하는 데 도움이 되는 기후 친화적인 관행을 촉진하는 데 중점을 둡니다.

한국은 이미 환경 문제 해결에 대한 확고한 의지를 가지고 기술, 제조, 혁신 분야의 글로벌 리더입니다. 한국은 재생 에너지 개발, 전기 자동차, 탄소 중립 기술 분야에서 상당한 기여를 해왔습니다. 그러나 기후 변화의 영향이 더욱 분명해짐에 따라 특히 배출량이 빠르게 증가하고 있는 아시아에서 기후 변화에 대응하기 위한 국제적 노력에서 한국의 역할을 강화하는 것이 중요합니다.

AZEC에 가입함으로써 한국은 녹색 기술과 지속 가능성 분야에서 리더십을 더욱 확장할 수 있습니다. 한국은 이웃 국가들과 협력하여 지식을 공유하고 혁신을 강화하며 기술 전문성을 활용하여 지역 전체의 배출량을 줄일 수 있는 기회를 갖게 될 것입니다. 한국의 참여는 지역 기후 목표 달성뿐만 아니라 신흥 녹색 부문에서 새로운 경제 기회를 창출하는 데에도 도움이 될 것입니다. 또한 한국이 AZEC에 가입하면 환경 관리 분야에서 글로벌 리더로서의 역할을 확고히 할 수 있을 것입니다. 파리협정에 대한 한국의 헌신과 야심찬 탄소 중립 목표는 AZEC와 같은 지역 기후 이니셔티브에 적극적으로 참여함으로써 지지되고 강화될 것입니다. 이러한 협력적 접근 방식은 아시아 전역에서 기후 행동의 효과를 크게 향상시킬 것입니다.
