Hangeul, Korea's new and scientifically designed alphabet, is the most wonderful writing system in the world. Created by King Sejong in 1443, it was to be simple and accessible so that everyone, regardless of background, could learn to read and write. In this world of globalization, where K-pop, K-dramas, and Korean cinema are taking over the world, Hangeul has the potential to become an international bridge for cultural exchange and education. With the increased demand in learning Hangeul, the need to modernize its educational resources also arises to meet the expectations of a global audience.
Currently, all types of mobile applications, websites, and online platforms to learn Hangeul have helped thousands upon thousands of people take the very first step toward learning the language. These will suffice for starting, but too many of these tools are antiquated, inconsistent, or not at all interactive, and hence can hardly hold the learner's attention, let alone help them progress beyond basic learning. Although the current resources are helpful, a standardized and innovative approach is needed to maximize global reach and impact on Hangeul education.
This petition calls for Hangeul education to become more accessible, enjoyable, and efficient for learners all over the world. First of all, existing learning platforms should be enhanced with gamification, interactive exercises, and other functions such as voice recognition, which helps learners enhance their pronunciation and fluency. New multimedia materials, such as animated videos, virtual flashcards, and storytelling-based tutorials, must be created in order to present learning in a more visually attractive and entertaining way.
Second, a unified global curriculum of Hangeul education should be implemented in all language schools, apps, and educational programs. If the same methodology is used, then learners all around the world will get structured high-quality lessons that make the process of learning Hangeul easier and more productive. Moreover, Korean language education should be included in schools and universities worldwide within the scope of cultural studies programs. With the ever-growing popularity of Korean culture, this is just the right time for Hangeul to be introduced to more and more people.
Another good example would be international celebration of Hangeul Day, held on October 9th, raising the desire to learn it. This may include free classes on Hangeul, cultural shows, and hands-on work in big cities of the world for promoting the alphabets with regard to cultural and historical significance. Last but not least, integrating technology and AI by partnering with well-known language platforms like Duolingo or Babbel will allow providing individualized learning experiences to worldwide audiences and will make Hangeul even closer.
Already noted as quite accessible and easy to learn, Hangeul has the potential to reach an even wider audience and inspire more people to engage with Korea's language and culture through a modern teaching method. What King Sejong had in mind-to create a writing system to make everyone powerful-is an idea as relevant now as it was several hundred years ago. The modern approach would let this great tradition continue strongly into our times.
Personally, as a person that never had any prior experience learning Hangeul was a bit of a challenge. Because I’m currently living in Korea for 42 days, I had to pick it up fast and when I tried to learn it online a lot of the website was actually quite helpful on introducing the language but unfortunately a lot of the programs had a paid wall.
Let's make Hangeul education more engaging, innovative, and accessible to learners all over the world. Sign this petition and help promote one of Korea's greatest cultural achievements in the global community!
