Correct the wrong information about Korea in English dictionaries such as Collins and America Heritage Dictionary.

Would you believe that Collins, one of the most used English dictionaries in the world, has misinformation about Korea? If you search for ‘Korea’ in various dictionaries such as the American Heritage English Dictionary and Dictionary.com as well as Collins Dictionary, you can find many errors about Korean history and culture.

The Collins Dictionary explains, 'Korea was an isolated tributary of Manchu China until the port was opened by Japan.' In addition, the Lookwayup.com English Dictionary, the name of Korea is written as Joseon. Four dictionaries, including Wordnik, exclusively label the East Sea of Korea as Sea of Japan. According to the International Hydrographic Organization, both names must be written together for the sea shared by various countries. In addition, most dictionaries omit the Korean history or explain it in reduced scale.

In response, VANK, Voluntary Agency Network of Korea, wrote a letter to Collins asking for correction of errors related to Korea. First of all, we requested to mark the East Sea. Plus, we clearly stated that South Korea has never been an isolated tributary state to China. Finally, we asked Collins to expand the positive description of Korean history such as Korean traditional food and custom.

Collins answered that they would give feedback to the editorial team so that the errors about Korea could be corrected when the next editing is made. However, even after four months, no corrections have been made at all.

Recently, various K-pop stars such as BTS, BLACKPINK, and Son Heung-min are leading the Korean Wave abroad. With foreigners' interest in Korea increasing, what kind of perception will foreigners have about Korea when they encounter misinformation about Korea?

이에 사이버 외교사절단 반크는 콜린스에 한국과 관련한 오류 시정을 요청하는 서한을 담았습니다. 우선 동해와 일본해의 병기 표기를 요청하였습니다. 항의서한 한국은 일본의 요구로 인해 항구를 개항하였으며 중국의 속국이었던 적이 없음을 분명히 밝히는 내용을 담았습니다. 마지막으로 콜린스에 한국을 검색하면 일제강점기, 전쟁, 분단만 노출되기 때문에 한국사에 대한 긍정적인 기술을 확대해줄 것을 요청하였습니다.

이에 콜린스는 다음 사전 편집이 이루어질 때 한국에 대한 오류가 수정될 수 있도록 편집팀에 피드백을 전달하겠다고 밝혔습니다. 하지만 4개월이 지났음에도 불구하고 수정은 전혀 이루어지지 않고 있습니다.
