"Is it certified 'Halal'? A Call for Accuracy in Food Stall Labels"

South Korea's allure as a global tourist destination is undeniable, with its rich culture, music, history, and delightful cuisine. As a Muslim, I want to emphasize the importance of adhering to Islamic dietary laws, particularly the consumption of halal food. In Islam, there are some crucial things we need to follow by the law of Islam, whether it’s from the Holy Qur’an or Hadith. The law of halal food is once mentioned in a verse in the Holy Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 168, meaning: “O humanity! Eat from what is lawful and good on earth, and do not follow Satan’s footsteps. He is truly your sworn enemy.” In this verse, it is mentioned that as Muslims, we need to eat as it was made from good and aiming for good, and in order to make sure it’s good, there are some easy ways to make it halal only if it's an urgent situation.

There is something that concerned me while visiting the biggest tourism attraction in South Korea, which is Myeongdong. In the vibrant streets of Myeongdong, a popular tourist hub, I encountered a common concern among Muslim travelers—ensuring the accuracy of halal food labels. Despite efforts to expand halal options, I discovered a significant issue with misleading or inaccurate labeling, which poses a challenge for conscientious Muslim travelers.

To address this, there's a call for stricter regulations and monitoring of halal certifications in South Korea. Collaboration between authorities, Islamic organizations, and certification bodies is essential to establishing reliable standards and ensuring that halal labels genuinely reflect the food's status.

Additionally, raising awareness among food vendors about the significance of accurate halal labeling is crucial. Training programs can educate them on the processes involved in obtaining and maintaining halal certification, fostering an environment where Muslim travelers can confidently make food choices.

Accurate halal labeling is not just about convenience; it's a matter of respect for diverse religious practices. The collaboration between authorities, certification bodies, and food vendors is vital to creating a reliable system and ensuring a welcoming and inclusive experience for all Muslim visitors to South Korea.
