Ever wondered how your gadgets, especially your phone, are being made? There are crucial raw materials for your phone. One of them is Kolwezi. Without Kolwezi, nearly all modern smartphones, tablets, laptops, and electric cars cannot recharge their batteries. This dirt contains cobalt, which gives rechargeable batteries the highest stability and energy density possible, enabling them to store more charge and run safely for extended periods of time.

In order to make your phone, there are some main ingredients that it needs, such as, for example, cobalt. How could this cobalt be found and used in material for our phones? The "copper belt" of the DRC's southeast provinces is home to mines that produce more than 60% of the world's cobalt supply. Creuseurs, or people like Elodie who mine informally, account for at least 20 percent of this supply, according to the government department in charge of monitoring this industry.The rest is generated by industrial mines, which, since the state-owned mining enterprise Gécamines collapsed, have mainly been run by international companies.

In December 2023, pop-star artist Dua Lipa had her chance to meet the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook. Dua Lipa confronted Tim Cook about the use of cobalt in apple products and the need to take responsibility for child labor mining and genocide that are currently happening in the DRC. In the interview, Tim Cook claimed that now he has changed all the ingredients to make the phone itself, such as using recycled cobalt. Some people said that it was a PR movement to made himself clean from the genocide that is currently happening in the Congo.

However, the grim reality remains: child labor, hazardous working conditions, and environmental degradation are rampant in the cobalt mining industry. As consumers, our choice of smartphones directly contributes to this silent tragedy. It's time to unmask the Congo Genocide perpetuated by our demand for smartphones and advocate for thoughtful phone choices. By supporting ethical and sustainable brands that prioritize responsible sourcing and production, we can collectively drive change.
